Jogjakarta Quake Death Toll Passes 5,427

Jogja quake toll jumps past 5,427 people and thousands more seriously injured after an earthquake flattened entire districts of Indonesia’s ancient royal city of Yogyakarta. The city of Bantul in east of Jogja city is heavily hit.

Many survivors who were injured or whose homes were destroyed have been staying on the grounds of hospitals and mosques or in makeshift shelters beside the rubble of their houses. The tremor early on Saturday was centred just off the Indian Ocean coast near Yogyakarta, the former Javanese royal capital.

Jogja’s earthquake also damaged the famous Prambanan temple complex, the largest Hindu temple compound in Indonesia, located in central Java, approximately 18 km east of Yogyakarta and an UNESCO World Heritage Site experience a mild damages to its structure.

Other temples that also damaged is Candi Boko, Candi Sewu, Candi Plaosan and Candi Sojiwan with Candi Sojiwan said to have been greatly destroyed almost all flat to the ground.
